FORT KNOX — Military police fatally shot a man who walked through the main gate at Fort Knox in Kentucky and tried to run over officers, officials said.
The shooting occurred early Sunday when the man walked towards Fort Knox police officers after initially fleeing them through the gate, which is near the US Bullion Depository, media reported citing a statement from the post. the army.
Officers initially responded to a call Saturday evening from a suspicious person outside the gate, but the man fled in a vehicle through the Chaffee Gate and onto the post when officers arrived, according to the communicated. When the chase ended, officers spent 90 minutes trying to verbally defuse the situation before the man attempted to ram and hit officers with his vehicle and officers shot him, the post said. . He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials say he was 41 and not affiliated with the military, but his identity has not been released pending notification from his next of kin.
“Although the motive is unknown, there is no initial indication that this incident was linked to extremists or terrorists,” the statement said.
