ELMIRA, NY (WETM) – The annual Elmira Salvation Army children’s coat drive needs your help. Officials tell us they are experiencing a lower turnout than expected.
âLast year we had a pretty constant flow of donated and incoming coats so we were able to just distribute them [with a] fairly quick U-turn. This year has been a little slower, âsaid Major Stanley Newton of the Elmira Salvation Army.
Each year during the holiday season, new and slightly used coats are collected, then distributed to families in need by the Salvation Army. Castle Cleaners on Hoffman Street in the city clean up used coats.
Last year they collected hundreds of coat donations. Although the coat collection is not yet complete, this year just over fifty coats have been donated to date.
âWe’re going to have a pretty cold winter, so I’m sure there will be a lot of people who need coats,â Major Newton said.
Major Newton says that so far they have mainly received donations of children’s coats and hope to get more donations of coats for teens and adults.
Castle Cleaners accepts donations until the end of the year, and if you would like to donate, you can drop it off directly with the cleaners.
