Emancipation Proclamation discussed at Civil War roundtable | News, Sports, Jobs


WHEELING — The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, in the courtroom at West Virginia Independence Hall.

A lecture on Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation will be given by Thomas Buckley. The conference is free and open to the public, but donations will be accepted.

Buckley is a lifelong resident of Flushing, graduating in 1969 from Union Local High School and graduating in 1997 from Ohio University in Athens.

Buckley married Lois Kemp in 1970, and they have two sons and three grandsons.

He taught history at Belmont College from 2003 until his retirement in 2015. He is a longtime member of the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable, served as the group’s past president, and is now the organization’s newsletter editor. He was one of the heroes in West Virginia history in 2020.

Buckley is also a member of the Belmont County History Detectives, a volunteer at the Flushing Underground Railroad Museum, and a member of the Belmont County NAACP.

He has a lifelong interest in history, his interest in the Civil War beginning with a visit to Gettysburg in 1969.

His special area of ​​study in the Civil War is the Maryland Campaign of 1862 and the Battle of Antietam.
