HARPERS FERRY – Join the Harpers Ferry Civil War Roundtable for a 6:30 p.m. (7 p.m. program) dinner program on Wednesday, April 13 at Camp Hill United Methodist Church, 601 Washington Street , Harpers Ferry. The speaker will be historian and columnist Doug Perks, who will talk about “One That Got Away”.
West Virginia became the 35th state during the Civil War. Although not part of the original 44 counties of the new state, there was a provision in the West Virginia Constitution that created a pathway for Jefferson County to join the state. Why did West Virginia want Jefferson County and how did Jefferson County leave Virginia?
Perks is the historian for Elmwood Cemetery, the Jefferson County Museum, and the Jefferson County Historical Society. He writes the “History Matters” column for the Spirit of Jefferson.
The program is free and open to the public, but participants are encouraged to book and attend the dinner to support the CWRT and the host institution. This month’s family dinner will feature fried chicken and baked beans, with all the trimmings, for only $20, payable at the door. Reservations must be made by Sunday, April 10 by contacting Chris Craig at [email protected]
