San Antonio – Members of the military are constantly lined up at the San Antonio food bank on Saturday, and they all face the same problem: food insecurity.
The Military Family Advisory Network, a nonprofit organization, has worked with the San Antonio Food Bank, Tyson Foods, and the Wounded Warrior Project to keep military families from worrying about where their next meal is coming from.
This effort reached over 600 military families as part of MFAN’s 1 Million Food Challenge. The event hosted active military personnel, reserve military personnel, veterans and military spouses.
Ahead of Saturday’s food rationing event, MFAN said the One Million Meal Challenge has successfully provided 543,948 meals to military families in need since spring 2021.
Today, more than 600 military households in San Antonio have received fresh vegetables and non-perishable items to meet their dietary needs.
“I’m grateful. I’m proud of everything San Antonio does for the community, especially the military community. I’m a veteran, so my son and I are doing everything they do. I’m very grateful to you,” Gabby Porus said.
Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank, said the effort is important, but more needs to be done to ensure that men and women are supported in the military. ..
“We cannot support him because we know that someone who fights for our freedom will sacrifice food in addition to what he has already sacrificed. I want to take care of them and make sure they can feed themselves and their families, ”Cooper said.
MFAN said it would continue this effort to provide food assistance and connect families to resources for the rest of the year in areas where it is needed.
