IAF wants anti-drone systems with laser weapons to destroy drones

The Indian Air Force (IAF) wants 10 anti-drone systems that can be armed with a laser-directed energy weapon to take down rogue drones in the wake of the attack on the Jammu Air Force station where aerial vehicles without pilot (UAV) were used to drop bombs.

A day after the June 27 attack, the IAF launched a Request for Information (RFI) for Indian suppliers of Counter Unarmed Aircraft System (CUAS).

SOFT AND HARD KILL OPTIONS

“CUAS is intended to detect, track, identify, designate and neutralize hostile UAS. The laser-directed energy weapon (Laser-DEW) is essentially required as a destruction option, ”says RFI.

The RFI mentions that the systems should be equipped with a Global Navigation Satellite Jamming System (GNSS) and radio frequency jammers as a soft elimination option and a laser directed energy weapon (Laser-DEW ) as a brutal kill option to destroy drones.

“It should provide a multi-sensor, multi-elimination solution to enforce effective no-fly zones for unmanned aircraft while inflicting minimal collateral damage to the surrounding environment. It should generate a composite image of the air situation for the operator and generate alerts based on user-defined parameters, ”the RFI requirements indicate.

THE SYSTEM MUST BE MOUNTED ON THE VEHICLE

All ten CUAS are required in a mobile configuration mounted on native vehicles with cross-country capability and powered by a native electrical power system (EPS).

The CUAS shall allow disassembly of all subsystems including the vehicle’s integrated power solution and mounting on a roof or open ground.

The whole system must be transportable by road and by air. The design should include modularity for rapid deployment and removal, according to RFI.

Among other specifications, the RFI also mentions that the radar should have 360 ​​degree coverage with a range of 5 km for a mini unmanned aircraft system.

Mini drones are extremely difficult to detect as they are low flying, slow moving objects and can miss radar.

DRONE DME FEATURES

The characteristics are similar to Israel’s drone dome system which can detect small targets at a distance of 3.5 km and shoot down drones with a high power laser beam.

A 360-degree radar system allows precise detection followed by visual tracking by the integrated camera. Manufacturers describe it as an end-to-end solution for the interception and destruction of hostile drones.

Thanks to its jammers or high-power laser beams, drones can be shot down.

DRDO DEVELOPING AN ANTI-DRONE SYSTEM

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has developed anti-drone technology to detect, intercept and shoot down drones under test.

“It has both soft kill and hard kill capabilities. We interact with all security agencies and try to improve the system. The industry has already taken the technology transfer. Bharat electronic Limited is the holder of the ToT. Other industries are coming forward, ”DRDO Chairman G Sateesh Reddy said, addressing the media.

He said the system has been developed and tests are underway.

“More contributions from the armed forces, discussions to modify it further,” added G Sateesh Reddy.
