Maddox teaches Spanish and Portuguese languages ​​and Brazilian culture in the Department of Foreign Languages ​​and Literatures at the College of Arts and Sciences. He received the honor on July 10, at the association’s annual conference, when the group recognizes the accomplishments of its members.

During the ceremony, Maddox was praised for achieving “the epitome of excellence in teaching at the university level”. He was praised for his course “Medicine and Literature”, which is revolutionary in the field of Spanish for specific purposes, encouraging critical thinking and addressing topical issues such as xenophobia. Outside of the classroom, Maddox advocates for immigrant rights and incorporates issues of race, gender and ethnicity into classroom discussions. He has organized workshops and seminars for teachers and academics on these topics. Her team lessons go beyond everyday conversation to include working on student-created iMovies to learn more about medicine, literature, history, and art.

“My outstanding colleagues in the Department of Foreign Languages ​​and Literatures have encouraged me to become a creative and informed teacher,” Maddox said. “Working at UAB has inspired me to maximize the learning potential of the students in my classes and to rethink what it means to be an effective language teacher for all major subjects and levels. For this, I have the privilege of being distinguished as teacher of the year.

Maddox’s innovative uses of technology allow its students to create conversational exchanges with prestigious universities in Mexico and Chile. One example of his creative lessons is a Twitter war between characters in a Carlos Fuentes short story.

His interdisciplinary research on the African diaspora informs his courses, as he publishes on social justice issues such as the memory of slavery, prison conditions and freedom of expression.

He has given back to the community of academics and educators by serving AATSP at the local and national levels. This year, he led the Graduate Student Day article competition to mentor new members of the organization.

Maddox, a non-native speaker of the two languages ​​he teaches, expressed his gratitude to his teachers, especially Jane “Juana” Futral of Wheeler County High School in Alamo, Georgia, his first Spanish teacher. Like her, he took students abroad to Spain and Puerto Rico.

Throughout his career, says Maddox, his colleagues have helped him become a better educator and mentor, and also helped guide him through his fields of study and throughout his combined doctorate. in Spanish and Portuguese.

Today, Maddox is focused on her professional development, such as the Signature Core Fellowship through the UAB Teaching and Learning Center programs. It works to create future language teachers as well as bilingual and trilingual professionals outside academia.

Maddox is one of the many teachers in the Department of Foreign Languages ​​and Literatures at UAB who have won awards in 2020 and 2021:

  • Erika Hille Rinker, Ph.D., received the prestigious Checkpoint Charlie Foundation Teacher Award 2020 from the American Association of Teachers of German.
  • Assistant Professor of French Charly Verstraet, Ph.D., received the “Best University Teacher” award by the American Journal of French Studies for his mentorship and dedication to his students.
  • Associate Professor of Spanish Roberto Mayoral Hernández, Ph.D., has been honored by UAB Disability Support Services for his work in supporting students with disabilities on campus.
  • Adjunct Assistant French Professor Sandrine Hope, Ph.D., has been named the Southern Conference on Language Teaching Excellence Post-Secondary Educator 2021, which is awarded to teachers who have demonstrated excellence in teaching. language teaching, active participation in SCOLT and leadership and advocacy at local, state and / or regional or national level.
