Meet the wounded of the civil war | Story

Longtime residents of Frederick are likely familiar with the outlines of the town’s Civil War history, especially its role in treating the wounded from the 1862 Battle of Antietam, one of the bloodiest events of United States history.

Photos and sketches of the aftermath of the battle at Frederick are commonplace on historical markers and in guidebooks. They include several interior shots of the city’s churches when they served as makeshift hospitals.
