For Sadhguru, the outlook is bleak, warning: “All infrastructure will collapse. When the infrastructure collapses, chaos will begin.

“Total civil unrest will begin at all levels – they expect 2035. There will be dozens of civil wars across the country across the world.

“Dozens of civil wars will occur in my country, your country, a country – we cannot predict [where]. It can happen just about anywhere.

In a conversation with Shri Satish Kumar – a British-Indian activist who in the 1970s walked 8,000 miles for peace – on Thursday, Sadhguru summed up the problem forcefully: “Machines aren’t crap.

In other words, “technology cannot produce organic matter”. Instead of putting organic matter back into the topsoil – whether by leaving organic waste on farmland or by growing protective plants next to crops – modern farming techniques pull nutrients from the soil with each harvest.

Tilling topsoil and then leaving it exposed to the elements also kills microbial organisms that feed crops.

Sadhguru criticizes the vast majority of British farming as being monoculture – growing one type of crop in one area.

He said UK soil “will be in very bad shape in 25 years” because the technique leaves soil exposed for large chunks of the year.

He added, “If people don’t understand what I’m talking about, come to a tropical country, stay in the sun for two hours, then walk under the shade of the tree; you will understand what climate change is, there are already four degrees of difference right there.

“That’s what happens to the other life. They also need shade. At one time the whole planet had shade – grasses, bushes, trees; something was there almost everywhere But today it’s over.”
