The 2021-’22 season will be the first for new music director Eun Sun Kim, whose appointment in December 2019 came up against a brick wall caused by a pandemic. She will conduct the company’s five performances of “Tosca” from August 21 to September 7. 3 period, a poignant choice, since Puccini’s work was both the first to play the brand new War Memorial Opera in 1932 and to reopen it in 1997 after repairing the damage caused by the Loma Prieta earthquake. .

Five fully staged operas will adorn the new season, including three new ones on stage, and it will also include a “Homecoming” concert that will be broadcast simultaneously from the Opera House on the big digital screen of the SF Giants Oracle Park for free, a concert with the company’s prestigious Adler Fellows and a special tribute concert featuring the music of Giuseppe Verdi.

The “Tosca” performances, featuring soprano Ailyn Perez and tenor Michael Fabiano, will require all participants to wear face masks and provide proof of full vaccination or negative COVID-19 tests within the past 72 hours. Seats will be reserved, with one seat vacant between games, and ticketing and programs will be digital rather than print. These restrictions are currently not planned for subsequent performances, but the company will continue to closely monitor the circumstances and set policies accordingly. In a generous gesture to customers, no fees will be charged for ticket exchanges, and they can be paid up to two hours before each performance.

A new production of Beethoven’s only opera, “Fidelio”, starring Elza van den Heever, Russell Thomas and Greer Grimsley, will premiere at 7:30 pm on October 14th. The summer season kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on June 4, 2022, with the conclusion of the Mozart-Da Ponte trilogy, a new production of “Don Giovanni”, set in the same house now in ruins in a dystopian future. Conductor Bertrand de Billy made his company debut, as did Franco-Canadian baritone Etienne Dupuis in the title role and Romanian soprano Adela Zaharia as Donna Anna. The season ends on June 30 at 7:30 p.m. with Kim leading the Opera Orchestra and Choir and the soloists of soprano Nicole Car, tenor Arturo Chacon-Cruz and bass Soloman Howard in the tribute concert to Verdi.
