An Ector County ISD student faces felony charges after being found in possession of a firearm at Bonham Middle School.

ECIDD reported on Monday that the Odessa District and Police Department had been notified that a student attending a summer school at Bonham Middle School may be in possession of a firearm. ECIDD police and headteachers responded immediately and found the student, a 13-year-old boy, in possession of a firearm.

“Police believe he brought the gun to school to show other students; there is no indication that he intended to harm anyone,” ECIDD reported in an email. “He is now charged with places where weapons are prohibited, a third degree felony, and will also be subject to disciplinary action by the school district.”

ECIDS thanked those who provided the information.

“’If you see something, say something’ is more than just a slogan; it is imperative for all of us to follow through in order to help keep our community safe,” added ECIDD. “We would also like to thank the officers and campus officials who acted quickly to locate the student and take him into custody. ECIDD, in conjunction with other local law enforcement agencies, has very specific protocols in place to respond to this type of incident and we are grateful for the cooperation between these agencies.
